Tournament’s History:
The Greensboro Open is a 3-round, one-day event that began in December of 2013 and is held every other month. One of the largest and most successful one-day events in the Southeast, this tournament attracts players from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The tournament is open to all players with a USCF membership (available for purchase on-site). The prize fund is always 80% of the entry fee pool which is one of the highest guaranteed pay-out percentages in North Carolina. Several USCF Masters regularly play at this event.

Only cash or checks will be accepted on site!! Register early and save money! Pre-registration deadline is 9:00 pm the day before the event. On-site registration is from 9:00am – 9:45am on the day of the event. Arrive On Time!!
Location: The “UNCG Alumni Association” at Alumni House, which is located at 404 College Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27412.
Parking: Behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum (off Tate St, right near the Spring Garden intersection)
Food: Lots of Restaurants on Tate Street and Spring Garden Street.
Tournament Details
Format: 3-Rounds Swiss
Time Control: G/75;d5 (Game 75 min. with a 5 second delay)
Round Times: Round 1 — 10:00 am; Round 2 — 1:15 pm; & Round 3 — 4:15 pm
Entry Fee: Masters w/ USCF Rating 2200+ Play Free (Entry Fee deducted from prize)
$25 for pre-registered players (must pre-register online to receive discount)
$30 on-site during the registration period (Cash or Check only)
Byes: One 1/2-point bye available any round — must declare before the start of event!
Sections: To ensure the best experience possible, we employ a flexible section format. The Tournament Director reserves the right to deviate from the below schedule if necessary. The most current USCF Supplement will be used for ratings/pairings.
  • Based on (=/<28) entrants:
  • 2 sections divided in half according to ratings.
  • Based on (28-40) entrants: 3 sections divided by thirds.
  • Based on (40-56) entrants: 4 sections divided by fourths.
  • Based on (=/>56) entrants: 5 sections divided by fifths and so forth…
Prizes: Based on 35 entries / $25 each / 3 sections ($700 total prize fund)
  • Upper Section: 1st Place = $145 (62.5%) 2nd Place = $58 (25.0%) Class Prize* = $30 (12.5%)
  • Middle Section: 1st Place = $145 (62.5%) 2nd Place = $58 (25.0%) Class Prize* = $30 (12.5%)
  • Lower Section: 1st Place = $145 (62.5%) 2nd Place = $58 (25.0%) Class Prize* = $30 (12.5%)
*Class prizes available to the lower ½ of each section at the discretion of the TD. Unrated players may win 100% of prizes in Upper Section, 50% of prizes in Middle Section, and 25% of prizes in Lower Section — subject to change depending on the number of Sections.
Online Entry closes the Friday before the tournament at 9.00 PM.
